WEEDS AND OTHER LOVELY THINGS

I went for a walk around the neighborhood yesterday, sometime in the morning between pleasantly cool and the promise of ponderous heat.

About a block away from home I found a patch of Queen Anne’s Lace growing by the sidewalk.  Whoever gave the plant such a poetic name obviously thought quite fondly of it, but some people consider it a weed, and I very much hope that the people whose yard it was are among the latter.  Assuming that they were, I pulled up their weeds for them.  The plant looked to be a volunteer, isolated in a strip of grass, and no cultivated plants were anywhere nearby – but I think I would have looked suspicious to anyone who saw me, because I kept looking around to make sure there was no one watching who would question what I was doing.

I plundered my own yard for other greens, and I’d like to think that whatever their feelings prior to my reckless thieving, the original owners of the Queen Anne’s Lace would agree that I’ve put their weeds to good use.
