I met a girl a few days ago who is altogether surprising. I found her otherworldly and rather alluring, but the most surprising part of her was her eyes.
I have to wonder why she has them. Was her father a fish? Is she the child of a trout who fell in love with a shadow? The shadow was so lovely and shy that the trout felt for her in his fish heart, and from that love came this unassuming, charming little girl. Her father loved her and wanted her to stay with him, but she was ashamed of having a fish for a father, and she ran away.
Is she under a curse, perhaps? Was she once a real girl? She was so wicked that one day a very old man came to her and cursed her so that she became nothing more than a shadow. But she was still wicked, so he returned and cursed her to go about for the rest of her life with the eyes of a fish. She was taunted by those whom she had once mocked, those whom she had once thought uglier than herself. She was put up as a lesson to all the wicked children of the world.
Her legs are slim and graceful, crossed as though she is walking, or perhaps she is dancing. Her dainty arms are at her sides. You can make out the outline of her winter coat, which she wears always because she is a shadow, and quite susceptible to the cold. She might be quite attractive if not for her eyes.
Has she traded beauty for extraordinary vision? Is she standing there, watching us all? Perhaps her eyes see through us and discover who we really are. She is discovering our secrets with her superior powers of sight and insight. She has traded beauty for these abilities, and we pass by her without even noticing that she is there. But she does not mind at all. She is looking inside us with her enormous eyes and laughing to herself.
